Tony Halton to retire at Easter

Tony Halton, group director, has announced he will be retiring at Easter.

Tony has worked as a nurse in the NHS for 30 years. For the past eight years he has worked at Barts Health in a number of key director roles. Most recently, Tony has held the roles of chief executive of Newham Hospital, and since he started shielding in March, Tony has been leading on our inclusion agenda and Covid recovery. During his time with us, Tony led the creation and integration of clinical support services following the merger in 2012, strengthened the leadership and led a culture change programme to improve patient services and care at Newham Hospital , and advanced our ambition to create an inclusive organisation.

Tony said: “I have had eight very rewarding years at Barts Health and it has been a real privilege and pleasure to work with so many talented people here in East London. I shall miss working at the trust, but I am really looking forward to making the most of this next phase of life!”

Alwen said: “I’d like to take this opportunity to thank Tony for his compassionate, visible and clinical leadership over so many areas of the trust. He has been a pleasure to work with during this time of the development of the group and I wish him all the best in his retirement.”

Adam Sewell Jones, who was appointed as interim chief executive at Newham Hospital in April, has provided strong leadership through this unprecedented time. Adam will remain in post for the foreseeable future. In line with our senior appointment process, we will be advertising for a permanent chief executive in the new year.
