Celebrating 70 years of the NHS

Celebrating 70 years of the NHS

As the NHS turns 70 we reflect on all that our fantastic staff do to provide safe and compassionate care for our patients.

Here we celebrate just some of the recent awards for which our incredible staff have hit the headlines.

  • Caterina Raniolo, Helen Alper, Samantha Ming, Tanya Usher and Wendy Olayiwola have been named outstanding women leaders in the NHS70 Women's Leaders Awards
  • Shafi Ahmed won the national NHS70 parliamentary award for ‘Future NHS’ based on his use of technology
  • Mr Martin Griffiths – a trauma surgeon at The Royal London Hospital - was named as the country’s Hero Doctor in the ITV and Mirror NHS Hero awards to celebrate NHS70. Mr Griffiths was hailed for his work to reduce violence by working with voluntary sector organisations and young people, in addition to his surgical work in which he has saved countless lives including victims of the London Bridge terror attack.
  • Director of Public Health Ian Basnett awarded an OBE for services to public health
  • Dr Satya Bhattacharya, a consultant general surgeon at The Royal London Hospital and Serjeant-Surgeon to Her Majesty the Queen and the Royal Household, has been made a Lieutenant of the Royal Victorian Order (LVO)
  • Dr Bijay Sinha – a consultant at Whipps Cross - was named as the number one shining star of NHS Health and Care at the NHS Confederation conference in June 2018. Dr Sinha also received the BME inspirational leader award at the Windrush70 awards.
  • Sexual Health and HIV consultant Dr Vanessa Apea and her mother Beatrice, a retired nurse, won the Windrush70 award for reducing health inequalities
  • The HSJ Value awards also saw us pick up two prizes – our estates team won for an innovative waste manage project, and our cardiac imaging team at SBH picked up the award for improving the value of diagnostic services. Our physician response unit was also highly commended.
  • Helen Rainey, Clinical Nurse Specialist at The Royal London Hospital, has been named Renal Nurse of the Year at the British Journal of Nursing Awards 2018 in recognition of her work in east London’s successful innovative approach to educating patients about chronic kidney disease
  • Chief Executive Alwen Williams was named in the top 10 NHS Chief Executives in the Health Service Journal
  • Midwives from a specialist team at Whipps Cross University Hospital in London were named the ‘Lansinoh maternity team of the year’ at the Royal College of Midwives (RCM) Annual Midwifery Awards 2018. The Ruby Specialist team provide bespoke services for some of the most vulnerable pregnant women across the Boroughs of Waltham Forest and Redbridge in London.
