Cardiothoracic surgeon at St Bartholomew's Hospital

Professor Wael Awad graduated from Imperial College London in 1988. He was interested in cardiothoracic surgery from an early stage and trained at the most prestigious teaching hospitals in London, including the Royal Brompton, The London Chest, Guys, St Bartholomew's and St Thomas's hospitals, with some of the leading and pioneering surgeons, including Professor Sir Magdi Yacoub, Professor Peter Goldstraw and Mr John Wright.

He was awarded a British Heart Foundation grant to undertake research on ischaemic preconditioning in the immature myocardium and was awarded a Doctor of Medicine Degree from the University of London in 1999. He was appointed consultant cardiothoracic surgeon at Barts Health NHS Trust in 2003, where currently practices. He is Professor of Cardiovascular Surgery at the William Harvey Research insitute, QMUL where he undertakes his academic research. 

Treatments and procedures

Professor Awad is interested in complex cardiac surgery, minimal access aortic valve replacement, mitral valve repair, surgery of the thoracic aorta, mechanical heart support and ventricular assist devices, training, teaching and research.

He performs the following procedures:

  • Total arterial revascularisation in coronary artery bypass grafting (CABG)
  • CABG with endoscopic vein harvesting
  • Aortic and mitral valve repair and replacement
  • Less invasive surgery
  • Surgery of the thoracic aorta and complex surgery involving multiple procedures in high risk patients

Leadership roles

Professor Awad is greatly involved in education. He is educational and clinical supervisor at St Bartholomew's and examines for the final MB examinations. He regularly teaches medical students and post-graduate doctors and is often complimented as the "best teacher they have had".

Professor Awad is lead surgeon for the transcatheter aortic valve implantation and mechanical circulatory support programmes. He is regularly invited to lecture and demonstrate new techniques and he has given numerous lectures in Europe, Japan, the USA and the Middle East. His contributions to the specialty have earned him a position in the Marquis Who's Who in Medicine and Healthcare, among the world's most respected works of reference recognising those whose achievements place them at the forefront of an evolving healthcare system. Professor Awad is also on the specialist training committee for cardiothoracic surgery in London.
