Dr James Aries

Consultant at St Bartholomew's Hospital

Dr Aries graduated from Edinburgh University in 2005 with a 1st class BSc honours degree in addition to his medical degree. He trained as a junior doctor in Edinburgh / Forth Valley before completing his core medical training at University College Hospital London. Subsequently he trained in general Haematology at Barts and the London with an emphasis on malignant haematology / transplantation, gaining his FRCPath qualification in 2016.

In 2016, he undertook a PhD at Queen Mary University of London (QMUL). His thesis was on the use of mass cytometry to identify cellular immune reconstitution patterns impacting on clinical alloreactivity after allogeneic haematopoietic stem cell transplantation. During this time, Dr Aries utilised several novel unsupervised and supervised machine learning algorithms using R. He was one of the first in the transplant community to develop a pipeline for the analysis of mass cytometry data in the identification of predictive immune signatures for acute Graft-versus-host disease. His work using these algorithms has recently been published in Blood and he presented his research at the American Society of Hematology annual meeting in 2019.

Dr Aries has worked as an NHS consultant at St Bartholomew's since 2019.
