Professor Amitava Banerjee

Constultant at St Bartholomew's Hospital

Amitava Banerjee is a Professor at University College London, Honorary Consultant Cardiologist at both University College London Hospitals and Barts Health NHS Trusts  and Consultant Cardiologist at OneWelbeck Heart Health. His expertise includes research, education, and clinical practice, particularly focusing on data science, cardiovascular disease, global health, and, more recently, examining risks associated with underlying chronic diseases and long COVID during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Having graduated from Oxford, Professor Banerjee underwent training as a junior doctor in Oxford, Newcastle, Hull, and London. His passion for preventive cardiology and evidence-based medicine led to a Master's in Public Health at Harvard in 2005, followed by an internship at World Health Organisation. He obtained a DPhil in epidemiology from Oxford in 2010. Prior to joining UCL in 2015, he served as a clinical lecturer in cardiovascular medicine at University of Birmingham.

He practices in two high-volume tertiary care hospitals, managing both inpatient and outpatient cases. While his subspecialty lies in heart failure, he is active in acute general cardiology and management of atrial fibrillation. His clinical practice informs his research, leading to medical technology evaluation, studying cardiovascular disease within underserved populations, exploring disease patterns in electronic health records, and long-term impact of COVID-19.

Research interests

His research has often informed guidelines and policy over the last 15 years, including National Institute for Clinical Excellence(NICE), Department of Health, European Society of Cardiology and British Heart Foundation. He leads a comprehensive health data research programme, whether in direct, indirect and long-term impact of COVID, cardiovascular and non-communicable diseases.

During and since his DPhil, he focused on population-based CVD epidemiology, particularly comparison of incidence, risk factors and aetiology across arterial territories. His research has spanned atrial fibrillation, heart failure, peripheral arterial disease, aortic disease and comparison across CVDs.

COVID accelerated and consolidated need for improved care across data, diseases and drugs at scale. The theme of better data for better care underpins his work, whether CVD in homeless individuals, NCD care in India, Global Burden of Disease Study or COVID. He leads the largest long COVID trial to-date, the NIHR-funded STIMULATE-ICP study, evaluating and improving integrated care from investigation and assessment to treatment and rehabilitation. He has published over 320 articles in top scientific journals and secured nearly £9 million of research funding as a principal investigator and over £35 million as a co-investigator, from heart failure and coronary artery disease to data science and health inequalities.
