Justin Pereria to retire
After over 20 years in the NHS, Justin Pereria, the director of estates and facilities at Newham Hospital, is set to retire later this month.
Justin began his career as an apprentice at BT, where he worked his way up to senior manager level, managing over 8,000 sites across the UK. He then moved to University College London with InterserveFM Ltd., where he was pivotal in delivery of the estates and facility management (EFM) for the new hospital, before finally joining Barts Health. In fact, Justin’s time at the Trust pre-dates its existence!
He joined Newham Hospital in 2008 as the head of site development and hard facilities management. He then became deputy director of EFM for the hospital and was subsequently appointed to his current position of director.
In his time at Newham Hospital, Justin has been instrumental in overseeing the development and delivery of important estates projects. These range from the construction of Glen Road itself – an incredible achievement in itself – to the redevelopment of the maternity unit and emergency department, refurbishment of our theatres and other large-scale projects.
Passionate about ensuring our hospital is a safe, appropriate environment for patients and staff, Justin has also been instrumental in improving its overall appearance on a day-to-day basis for both staff and patients. He’s done this by working closely with our wellbeing lead, the local council and Barts Charity to overhaul our staff and public gardens and to install the cycle hub.
During his time at Newham Hospital, Justin received prestigious industry awards including Best Use of Innovative Funding and the International Green Apple Award for Environmental Best practice. He was also instrumental in Barts Health becoming the first trust to be given the Carbon Trust award for innovative, sustainable energy schemes.
But Justin’s reach extends beyond Newham Hospital. In 2020, he was appointed as director of estates and facilities for the NHS Nightingale Hospital London, when NHS England commissioned its opening during the Covid-19 pandemic. Later that year, he took on the same role for the Covid-19 vaccination centre at ExCeL London, which was run by Barts Health, further cementing the vital role he played in responding to the pandemic. Reflecting on his time at Newham Hospital, Justin said:
“I’m so proud to have worked in the NHS for so long, and that the majority of this time was spent as part of the Newham Hospital family. I’ve seen a lot of positive changes at the hospital and across the Trust since I joined, and I’m proud that I, along with the brilliant people I’ve worked with over the years, have played a role in making these changes happen. It was also an amazing experience to be part of the national response to the pandemic, which is something I’ll never forget.
“I’d like to thank everyone at Newham Hospital and across Barts Health who I’ve had the privilege of working with over the last 20 years. It’s been a great experience in so many ways and I can’t wait to see the hospital and Trust progress even more in the coming years.”
