We look back at 2019's most viewed stories - and what a year it was!

January

Three staff from the Royal London were awarded an OBE in the New Year’s honours 2019 following their work to help care for victims following the 2017 London Bridge attacks.

We began preparations for the move to NHS Mail.

And one patient celebrated her 100th birthday at the Royal London thanks to the team in Trauma and Orthopaedics, despite being in recovery for a fall.

February

We celebrated coming out of quality special measures as the majority of our services were rated as 'Good' following a major CQC inspection.

We also celebrated our staff at the annual Barts Health Heroes awards.

The Rainbow Centre staff at Newham Hospital celebrated outstanding care on its second birthday.

A renowned cartoonist transformed the Cystic Fibrosis (CF) Unit at St Bartholomew’s Hospital with art, specially created to capture the imagination of its patients and transport them away from the hospital environment.

March

A clinical trial featuring patients from our hospitals found an injectable HIV drug could transform the lives of millions living with the condition.

April

BAFTA-nominated Operation:Live returned to our screens for a second series featuring live surgery from the Royal London - this time brain surgery, spinal surgery and a kidney transplant were featured.

The Royal London Hospital went green for Good!

May

The Royal London's violence reduction trauma team won the 'prevention and lifestyle' Team of the Year title at the British Medical Journal awards thanks to the pioneering programme preventing knife crime in East London.

June

Martin Griffiths was appointed the first NHS clinical director for violence reduction and we opened our brand new Clinical Research centre at the Royal London.

July

The Tower Hamlets homeless team won a regional Parliamentary award.

August

A new urgent treatment centre opened in Tower Hamlets today, offering GP-led healthcare 24 hours a day, seven days a week to local residents.

September

The new Barts Charity tap-to-donate points were launched across our hospitals, enabling patients to donate instantly on site.

We welcomed the Whipps Cross redevelopment funding announcement.

October

The WeConnect transition to digital nursing documentation was rolled out across our sites, as part of our commitment to become fully paperless by this year.

Some of our staff were highlighted in the Evening Standard's London's Progress 1,000 most influential people list.

November

Whipps Cross Eye Treatment Centre won an award for their work on the environment, thanks to their 'green-tinted glasses'!

December

We launched our competition to find the most inspiring women at Barts Health for International Women's Day next year.

We used our Barts Health Advent Calendar to reflect on the year further! Head to the #JingleBarts hashtag to read more inspiring stories from the past year.

 

A year in numbers...

In 2019:

1,428 - the number of nominations we received for Barts Health Heroes.

Five – the number of staff diversity networks we now have (BME, carers’, women’s, LGBTQ+ and BartsAbility)

469 – in 2019 we celebrated our 469th View Day at St Bartholomew’s. First held in 1551, it’s never been cancelled

200 - the number of donations through our brand new Barts Charity tap-to-donate points for our hospital, many of which were a response from patients following high-quality care.
