Barts Health nurse shortlisted for NHS Parliamentary award

The shortlist has been announced for the annual NHS Parliamentary Awards and congratulations go to Barbara Sribalan who was the winner of the London region award for a Lifetime achievement award. She has also been shortlisted for a national award.
The awards were established to give MPs the opportunity to recognise NHS staff and people within the health and care sector. The award online award ceremony is due to be held in 2021.
Barbara who moved from Malaysia to become a nurse in 1973 recently retired. She worked as a theatre nurse and later a team leader in gynecology starting at Whipps Cross Hospital since 1976. She later became a team leader in the gynecology theatre where her challenge was to ensure daily operating sessions were managed efficiently, instruments were available, and stocks replenished. Her work in advancing care had an important impact on patient experience. Patients had a shorter hospital admission, experiencing less pain with faster recovery times and better surgical outcomes.
On hearing the news she said “I spend 40 years working at Whipps Cross, they were challenging, but immensely rewarding. This award was a team effort and I would like to pass on my heartfelt thanks to all my colleagues.”
Barbara was responsible for the organisation and coordination of an advanced gynaecological surgery theatre and equipping emergency theatres for gynaecology procedures, which led to Whipps Cross Hospital becoming a centre for advanced endometriosis care.
Stella Creasy MP who nominated Barbara passed on her congratulations stating “I’m delighted to see Barbara make the shortlist for the NHS Parliamentary awards. It’s very much deserved, given her amazing dedication and leadership in improving providing the best possible gynecological care and treatment to so many patients over so many years."
The professionalism and dedication shown by NHS staff has been recognised by MPs, with over half putting forward nominations for the awards. Barts Health submitted 30 nominations that covered categories such as wellbeing at work, excellence in healthcare and care and compassion. Congratulations to all of those who were put forward for nomination.
