Group director of inclusion

Mr Ajit Abraham has joined the Barts Health Group Executive Board as our new group director for inclusion and equity.  

In this role, Ajit will lead on the Trust's ambition as set out in our WeBelong strategy: to make Barts Health a genuinely inclusive place to work for all our staff and promote equity for our patients and population. 

Ajit is currently the undergraduate dean for Barts Health  and has been the co-chair for the Trust's Inclusion Board since November 2020.  

He joined Barts Health in 2005 as consultant general, trauma and hepato-pancreato-biliary (HPB) surgeon at The Royal London. He has previously held various leadership roles, including chair of the Barts Health Surgery Board and deputy chief medical officer. He was a Health Foundation QI (quality improvement) fellow at the Insitute for Healthcare Improvement and the Harvard School of Public Health 2011-12 and is the principal of staff for the College for Leadership in Healthcare.  

In addition to being an active surgeon and champion for inclusion and equity, he has made substantive contributions to shaping and implementing the Barts Health strategies for patient safety, quality improvement, surgery, leadership development and inclusion. Ajit has a longstanding 'Hatha Vinyasa' Yoga and 'Vipassana' meditation practice and sees the connection between wellbeing and inclusion as self-evident. 

Commenting on his new role, Ajit said: 

"I am delighted and privileged to be taking on this role. Fairness matters to us all. As a frontline surgeon and senior clinical leader, I recognise that inclusion and equity are prerequisites for delivering excellent healthcare. I will strive to help create a fair and just culture at Barts Health where all staff are valued and can bring their best selves to work to help deliver high quality, safe and compassionate care and health for the patients and diverse communities we serve."

    Well done Dr.A Abraham for taking this role for all the patients and for all the staffs. I personally congratulate you for giving your heart to these matters being a front liner, you can relate well to the needs of all under rated and abused staffs taking roles and not paid accordingly.
    I work at the Phlebotomy Department and since the pandemic, we are inundated with the amount of patients needing blood test.
