Showing our gratitude to the Windrush generation

72 years ago today, two weeks before the NHS was founded, several hundred people arrived in this country from the Caribbean aboard the Empire Windrush. Many of them and their families went on to work in the NHS.

That is why we are proud to commemorate Windrush Day, and celebrate the contribution members of that generation made to the NHS in general, and to our group of hospitals across east London in particular.

This anniversary is especially poignant as we come to terms with the disproportionate impact that Covid-19 has had on people from Black, Asian and Minority Ethnic backgrounds.

It underlines the importance of taking decisive action to make changes that will tackle racism and address inequalities in our society. Here at Barts Health we are working with our BAME staff to urgently review our own inclusion strategy and see what more positive steps we can take on behalf of our diverse staff and communities.

This is long over due, all BAME should see and experience all positive step that has been taken and should benefit these staff at all level within the trust.
