Tajinder Rehal joins non-executive board of directors

Tajinder Rehal, an NHS-trained clinical pharmacist and East London resident, has joined the Board of Barts Health as a trainee non-executive director.

Taj has spent most of her career so far in the NHS, including spells as Assistant Chief Pharmacist and subsequently a senior operations manager at Barking, Havering and Redbridge NHS Trust.  Six years ago she was recruited to the high-flying leadership programme of GSK, and is currently responsible for the international marketing of the company’s HIV medicines across the Middle East, Asia and Latin America.

She joins the Trust as part of the national NExT Director scheme to help find and support the next generation of talented people from black, Asian and minority ethnic communities to become non-executive directors in the NHS. This is not the first NHS Board she has worked with, however: she was previously mentored by the Chief Executive of Moorfields Eye Hospital.

Ian Peters, the Trust chair, said: “I am delighted to welcome Tajinder to our Board. Although the appointment is akin to an apprenticeship, she brings to it the broad perspective of a clinician and NHS manager who has both commercial experience and local roots.”

Taj has lived in East London all her life and is currently a Woodford resident. She knows our hospitals and their communities; her second son was born at The Royal London, and her husband trained at Barts and the London Medical School.

She said: “I feel a strong connection to the NHS, I have personal experience of Whipps Cross, The Royal London, and St Bartholomew’s, and I am passionate about delivering great care to our patients. I want to help the Trust achieve its objectives and am impressed by the bold steps it is taking to become a truly inclusive organisation. Training to be a non-executive director will give me the opportunity to learn from others on this exciting journey.”
