Chest Pain Clinic
Purpose of the clinic
The purpose of the clinic is to assess the likelihood of your chest pain being caused by narrowing of the vessels that supply blood to your heart (known as coronary artery disease). This condition is usually associated with chest pain symptoms referred to as ‘angina’.
If we suspect that coronary artery disease may be causing your symptoms, you may be referred for further tests. Sometimes these tests identify other cardiac causes of chest pain (such as problems with the heart valves or heart muscle) which may require referral to another specialist team within the cardiac department.
If the nurse decides that your chest pain is unlikely to be cardiac in origin, you will be discharged back to your GP.
Clinic appointment
You will be seen in clinic by a Clinical Nurse Specialist, who has extensive experience in cardiology, undertaken specialist training and additional qualifications. During the consultation the nurse will document your symptoms, medication, other medical conditions and they will listen to your heart and lungs. You will also have an electrical recording of your heart (an electrocardiogram – ECG). The nurse uses this information to decide if your symptoms are angina, caused by coronary artery disease /narrowing of the heart blood vessels. The clinic follows guidelines produced by NICE (National Institute for Health and Care Excellence). You are unlikely to have any additional tests on the day of your assessment.
We advise that you arrive 15 minutes early to allow time for your ECG.
Advocate / Interpreter
If you are not fluent in English we seek to provide an interpreter who is qualified health advocate. Please contact the clinic as soon as possible to arrange this. This cannot be arranged on the day and if not pre- arranged we will have to re-schedule your appointment.
Late arrivals / Rescheduling / Non attendance
If you are late for your appointment we cannot guarantee that you will be seen. If you are unable to attend a booked appointment please inform us as soon as possible. If you do not attend your appointment you will be referred back to your GP.
