New Community Participation Lead appointed at Whipps Cross

Althea and Alex image

Congratulations to Althea Bart who has been appointed to the role of Whipps Cross Hospital community participation lead.

This is a new role within the hospital to lead on and strengthen our community engagement and participation in the current hospital, with a key focus on the Whipps Cross redevelopment.

Althea will work alongside teams across the hospital and Trust, as well as with local health and social care partners, supporting and reinforcing the great work of the hospital and staff and the wider health system, in a joined up approach, to build a positive and enduring partnership with our diverse communities.

Althea, who is currently operations manager at Waltham Forest Healthwatch, will take up the post in November. She is very experienced in community engagement and has a deep knowledge of the local community.

Althea said:

I am thrilled to be taking up the role as Community Participation Lead at WXH. I am excited about the possibility of working with residents, partners and providers to create an anchor organisation that reflects the aspirations of local communities and the hospital.

New Independent Chair of the Whipps Cross Redevelopment Community Forum appointed

We are also welcoming Alex Russell, who has been appointed as the independent chair of the Community Forum.

The Whipps Cross redevelopment community forum is a platform for bringing together community engagement organisations from Waltham Forest, Redbridge and Epping Forest, to build strong, meaningful and impactful relationships between the hospital and the communities it serves.

As the independent chair, Alex will work with the forum and its members on a wide range of initiatives to support the hospital to deliver positive and lasting community impact.

Alex is currently the executive chair of Hackney Wick and Fish Island Community Development Trust. Alex is also an independent consultant who works with communities to enable them to have a voice and influence in decisions relating to their neighbourhood.

Alex said:

The Community Forum is playing an important role is supporting Whipps Cross to develop its relationship with the community it serves and, in doing so, provide excellent user and patient experience. I’m looking forward to working with all those involved to promote the work of the Forum and support the group in progressing the partnership.

Zebina Ratansi, Director of nursing, said:

Community engagement and participation is so important to help us to keep improving our services at Whipps Cross, so I am really looking forward to welcoming both Althea and Alex to help us to continue to listen to, involve and learn from our communities.
