Newham maternity team pampered

Member of the team receiving a massage

The hard-working maternity team at Newham Hospital have enjoyed some much-needed pampering.

As part of the Royal College of Midwives’ Caring for You campaign, the team were offered a range of treats including massage and reflexology. Also on the menu were mindfulness sessions, healthy eating advice, fresh smoothies and make-up lessons.

Caterina Raniolo, Maternity Project Manager, who organised the event explained: “We asked the team what we could do to support them and they joked that they wanted massages and some pampering. So we thought, why not?

“We have to look after our staff so they are able to look after other people.”

Midwives, doctors, support assistants and domestics – who all play a vital role in helping the hospital to deliver 6,000 babies a year – all dropped in to the event. The doors opened at 8am so that night staff could enjoy some breakfast, a fresh fruit smoothie and a massage before they headed home to bed.

Student midwife Bridie Martin-West said: “It’s such a lovely idea and the massage was amazing.”

Pat Stephenson, who works in the physiotherapy department at the hospital, volunteered her time to offer massages and advice. Pat said: “It’s great to make the maternity team feel appreciated and to give them some time out.”
