We’re improving our maternity spaces

From 9th June 2025, we’ll be starting work to improve and update our maternity areas to make them more comfortable and modern for you and your baby.
Our new postnatal and antenatal wards will have a mixture of single rooms with ensuite bathrooms and three bedded bays to provide all mothers and babies more privacy and comfort.
While this work is taking place, we’ll continue to offer safe, high-quality care – but there may be some changes you should be aware of:
- Our Mulberry Ward, where our postnatal ward and antenatal care is delivered is the area where most of the changes will happen.
- Our postnatal care will continue to be delivered from our Mulberry Ward as well as on Lilac Ward. Our antenatal care and women coming in for Induction of Labour (IoL) will continue to be managed across Mulberry Ward.
- This may have an impact on our midwifery-led birthing service, and we will liaise with our sister hospitals to support patient choice in this area.
- Antenatal outpatient care, labour and triage services will stay the same.
- We are temporarily reducing our capacity of our Midwifery-Led Birth Suite but will work with our birthing mothers and hospitals to support patient choice.
- We will be moving our Neonatal Unit out into the main hospital (Victory Ward – Junction 9, LG floor) for the initial refurbishment with a plan for it to return to the 1st Floor of the maternity building in July.
- You may notice some delays in being transferred from labour ward to the postnatal ward during the building works as there will be a temporary reduction in space while the work is being carried out.
- As there will be fewer beds at times, we may offer you care at one of our Barts Health hospitals if your pregnancy is low risk.
We expect all work to be completed by 31st January 2026, with the aim of minimal disruption to your care here at Whipps Cross Hospital.
We know and understand how important this time is for you and your family. Our team will continue to do their best to make sure your care remains as smooth and positive as possible.
Thank you for your understanding while we make our maternity services even better for you.
